Tourists who come to enjoy the scenic beauty of the city would soon get the assistance of tourism police. The police department has already received Rs 20 lakh for setting up a tourism police station in the city.
The decision to start a unit of tourism police in Kozhikode was taken in the backdrop of increasing attacks against tourists. The attacks on women and pick pocketing could be prevented with this effort to set up tourism police unit, said an official.
Police personnel will also be deployed at various tourism spots in the city for protecting tourists from the attack of thieves and anti-social elements.
Police officials are trying to identify unused government buildings for starting tourism station as The Coastal Regulations Act prevents construction on the sea shore, said city police commissioner G Sparjan Kumar. Only renovation of old buildings is permitted under the law, he added.
"The search for a building has been started and the tourism aid post will start functioning soon after identifying a building," said Sparjan. We are trying to set up a unit near beach as large number of foreign as well as domestic tourists reach Kozhikode and Beypore beach, he added.
