the tourism department is all set to develop the south beach as a major tourist destination. The department has already earmarked Rs 3.85 crore to carry out the beautification works on the stretch.
"A 3-km stretch of the beach starting from the already beautified portion is included in the project," said regional joint director of tourism C K Ponnappan. Tourism department has already issued an order in this regard and inauguration of the project work is expected to be held in March.
First phase of the project will cover 700 metre stretch. The project plan also includes setting up of the first beachside children's park of the district. The park would be constructed in such a way that a portion of the park would be extended to the sand bank, said officials with the tourism department adding that slides and swings would be installed at the landscaped park.
District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has been appointed the implementing agency of the project and the construction work will be carried out by the harbour engineering department.
