Kerala aims to redevelop the ancient spice route for the modern traveller by connecting with 31 countries in Europe, Asia and Far East to create a new experience for tourists.
"Traditionally, we have relied on our beaches, backwaters, ayurveda and hill stations to promote tourism," state tourism secretary Suman Billa said. "Now, we want to project the state as the heart of the ancient spice route, with links to other trading nations. We propose to develop and promote a multi-national spice-themed route modelled on the Silk Road with the World Tourism Organisation's help. Sustainability and involvement of local communities will be the central elements of the spice route project,"
Besides re-establishing Kerala's maritime trade relations, built on 'pepper' with the 31 countries, the plan is to trigger voyages and excursions for the traveller. The emphasis would also be on cultural, historical and archaeological exchanges.
