Kerala Forest department to promote eco-tourism

Eco-park, traditional village culture, gardens on the anvil

Initiatives for promoting eco-friendly tourism by introducing various projects are on the anvil, said forest minister K B Ganesh Kumar. He was speaking to media persons at KSFDC office here on Friday.

"All the tourism spots and centers will be linked with each other. All the eco-tourism centers under the ownership of the forest department including Arippa of Thiruvananthapuram, Munnar, Nelliyampathi and Kambamala of Wayanad will be developed in accordance with environmental compliance," the minister said. 

The forest department will start tour packages from Thiruvananthapuram to Neyyar, Kottur, Kallar and Ponmudi, from Kottayam to Peermade, Gavi and Vagamon, and from Nanjankodu to Muthanga, Kuruva, Mananthavadi from this year onwards as per a TOI report. An eco-park would be started on the land, which has been acquired for building 'Gandhi Smruthivanam' at Purakkatt, Alappuzha. "The traditional village culture of Kuttanad, will be recreated here", said the minister. "The timber depot at Kottayam will be developed as a full-fledged garden with a walkway, making it an ideal hangout".

"The department also has plans to develop estates, which have been confiscated by government after the lease period has been exceeded, and handed over to forest department, as tourist centers. Agreements have been signed with government regarding this. The estates acquired by the forest department would be renovated in due time. The employees in these estates will be protected", he said.
