The development and promotion of tourism is primarily the responsibility of the respective State Government/Union Territory (UT) Administration. However, the Ministry of Tourism provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for tourism infrastructure development projects identified in consultation with them, subject to availability of funds, inter-se-priority and adherence to Scheme Guidelines.
In the 11th five-year plan, out of a total of 1225 projects amounting to Rs 4090 crore identified for CFA, Jammu Kashmir had the maximum with 145 projects summing up to Rs. 391.2 crore. Sikkim stood second with 86 projects lined up amounting to Rs 213.7 crore, and Nagaland stood third with 75 projects amounting to Rs. 177 crore.
Puduchery had the highest number of projects at 20 amounting to Rs. 74.8 crore amongst Union Territories and Andamans had the least with no projects. The country had a total of 1226 projects and added up to Rs 4090 crore.
