The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism department held a three-day long mountaineering meet in collaboration with Indian Mountaineering Foundation in a bid to boost adventure tourism in the state.
The seminar, which began on Friday in Srinagar was organised with an aim to popularise the sport among the youth and promote adventure tourism in the valley.
The event saw active participation from over 60 well-known mountaineers across the country. Speaking to reporters, J-K Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir said promotion of adventure tourism is very important for the over all development of tourism.
"Here in Jammu and Kashmir we have identified only certain areas yet for tourism promotion. People want that there should be diversification of tourism in the state.
Adventure tourism plays an important role in diversification of tourism and I strongly feel that if it booms in the Valley it will engross the entire province," said Mir. Recently, the Indian Mountaineering Club in association with the tourism authorities had also organised a rock climbing coaching camp for girls.
Retired Colonel H S Chouhan, President of Indian Mountaineering Foundation, said tourism department needs to train locals in order to make most of the available resources. "If we want to take complete advantage of tourism, then we will have to prepare the service providers, who are generally from the locals.
