The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) may soon make it compulsory for its Package Tour customers between 60-70-year age group to carry a medical certificate from a physician saying they are fit for the journey and are carrying all medicines required during any emergency. The undertaking must be approved by a qualified doctor, besides explicitly declaring that IRCTC should not be held responsible for his/her medical health.
it is also likely to make it mandatory for every traveller above 70 years of age to have a companion for its package tours.
As per a report in TOI by manthan K Mehta, there have been several instances of the elderly falling ill during IRCTC's package tours. Six people had died on tour in one case. Many fall ill or their health deteriorates during a journey which could be hectic, especially for senior citizens. So, IRCTC plans to introduce these rules for package tours from West Zone.
Nearly 12,000 travellers choose various package tours of the IRCTC's West Zone every year. Virendra Singh, Group General Manager of IRCTC West Zone, said, "We do not want to discourage senior citizens from choosing our package tours. But, there has to be some method to ensure commuters who are unfit do not travel risking their health."
