Indian tourists can now drive down Colombo's streets in one's own vehicles. Scotia Prince, India's first international passenger ferry service offers the drive-in, drive-out facility. One can simply drive one's car into the ferry, then enjoy the travel across the sea in an economy, deluxe, business or first class cabin and then drive out to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Emereld Isles at one's own leisure.
According to a report in the TOI, to avail the facility, passengers need to obtain the "Carnet de Passage" document from the Automobile Association of India for approximately Rs 5,000. On reaching Sri Lanka the passenger has to approach the local automobile association to obtain a temporary registration certificate to go around the country in their own vehicle.
The first passengers to avail this facility on board the Scotia Prince were two Australians who used it to travel from India to Sri Lanka. They had obtained the certificate from Australian Automobile Association.
The new facility promises to boost tourism between India and Sri Lanka.
