The top 10 tourism countries cater to around 45 per cent of the world's tourists; while India only has a 0.64 per cent share despite being ranked 38th on the most sought after tourist destinations list, said S P Bansal, the vice-chancellor of the Maharaja Agrasen University in Himachal Pradesh.
Bansal was speaking on Sunday at the national seminar on "Contemporary Tourism Planning: Introspecting Problems and Prospects" held jointly by the department of tourism administration of the Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University and the Indian Tourism Congress, an apex organization of tourism academicians and researchers.
He also expressed concern over many foreign women tourists cancelling their trips to India ever since the December 16 gangrape in Delhi.
Recalling that world made a new record on December 13, 2012 with the number of tourists crossing the more than one billion mark, Bansal said that the security of tourists should be addressed and visa norms should be simplified in order to promote and attract tourists from other countries.
Bansal talked about improving the transport infrastructure so as to reduce travel time in the country.
