The number of Indian tourists flocking to Singapore has gone up steadily, making India one of the five top tourism generating nations for the city state.
Of the total 13.2 million international tourists who visited Singapore last year, 8,69,000 tourists were from India, an increase of five per cent over 2010, according to data released by the Singapore Tourism Board.
The South East Asian nation attracts a large number of tourists, a bulk of them from Asian nations, and India is the fifth largest contributor to this sector after Indonesia, China, Malaysia and Australia.
Asia accounted for 76 per cent of the total visitors during the year.
The number of Indians visiting the country has gone up in recent years. In 2010, around 8,29,000 Indians toured Singapore, which was a jump of 14 per cent as compared to the previous year.
However, the number of Chinese visiting the country has witnessed the maximum jump, with 15,77,000 Chinese going to Singapore i 2011, up 35 per cent as against 2010.
Indonesia last year sent 25,92,000 visitors, an increase of 12 per cent against 2010; Malaysia 11,41,000 visitors, up by 10 per cent; and Australia 9,56,000 visitors, up 9 per cent.
Overall, Singapore recorded an increase of 13 per cent tourists from the previous year, the board said.
