India Tourism Development Corp. (ITDC), which runs Ashok hotels, plans to enter in non-hotel businesses, including hospitality education and cruise tourism.

The company, which runs 16 hotels, plans to set up a hospitality and tourism university in Rajiv Gandhi education city at Rai village on the Delhi-Haryana border over the next two years and launch a cruise in Andaman and Nicobar.

The company expects to report a profit of Rs.30 crore this fiscal and is targeting a profit of Rs.50 crore next year, said Lalit K. Panwar, vice-chairman and managing director, ITDC. “We have cut down our costs, motivated our employees, and done some aggressive marketing to publicize our properties. We have also invested around Rs.70 crore in upgrading our existing properties including The Ashok, Samrat hotel and Janpath hotel in Delhi. It has led to our guests coming back to us.” he told to Mint.

“We are waiting for a detailed project report, which will be submitted to us by 31 March. We have already earmarked the land, and will be taking up the issue with Haryana government,” said Panwar. “Once the land is allocated, we will go for a global tender to partner with the best foreign hospitality universities.”
