Humane Society International praises Hyatt Regency Kolkata for being the first in the Bengal hospitality industry to initiate procurement of cage-free eggs.
In doing so, the hotel joins an international movement against the inhumane confinement of egg-laying hens in barren battery cages. Most egg-laying hens in India are confined in battery cages that provide each bird less space than a standard size sheet of paper to spend her entire life. By not using eggs from hens in battery cages, Hyatt Regency Kolkata has taken an important step towards improving the treatment of animals and sustainability. "Cage-free egg production is a significant improvement over conventional battery cages.
These hens are allowed to walk around, perch and lay eggs in a nesting area," said Hyatt Regency Executive Chef Vikram Ganpule. "By embracing cage-free eggs, we can help move towards a more humane world that we all strive to create." N. G. Jayasimha, HSI's campaign manager in India praised the hotel's decision and said: "Hyatt Regency is setting a positive example for others in the Indian hospitality industry. Humane Society International commends Hyatt Regency's decision to help improve the treatment of farm animals."
