Maharashtra continues to be the state that sends the largest number of tourists to Gujarat. "About 35 percent tourists, that is, 18.80 lakh came from Maharashtra in the last financial year, 2012-13. The gross tourist flow during the year was 254.09 lakh which is 13.62% higher than the flow in 2011-12," said a release issued by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited (TCGL) on Monday.
Adressing a press meet in Mumbai on Monday, Saurabh Patel, tourism minister, Gujarat said, "We will continue to aggressively market Gujarat as a tourist destination in India as well as abroad." Among the festivals lined up to attract tourists are the Monsoon festival, which begins on August 3, Tarnetar Fair to be held from September 9 to 11, Navratri festival and the Rann Utsav.
The Monsoon Festival will be a month long event in the hill station of Saputara. The destination is close to three major water falls, Gira, Mayadevi and Girmal Falls. "The Tarnetar Fair is a celebration of ethnic Gujarat's folk-dance, music, costumes and the arts. The fair is centred around young tribal men and women seeking marriage partners. Being the most important fair of Saurashtra region, Tarnetar is attended by more than 50,000 people," said a release issued by TCGL.
