Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu has released a passenger charter on Wednesday that allows the rights of air travelers in India. The new rules laid under the charter will provide relief to the air travelers and will provide them with compensations as well.
The new charter rule will provide relief in the charges that the travelers have to pay on cancellation and reschedule of air travel. Given that the cancellation and rescheduling are caused by the airline concerned.
The new rule says that if the flight that is expected to delay for more than 4 hours then the airline is liable to arrange a free meal and refreshment for the passenger and if the delay happens for more than 6 hours then a full refund of the ticket will be provided to the passenger.
Also if the flight rescheduled between 20:00 and 3:00 hours gets delayed for more than 6 hours then the passenger would be given free hotel accommodation. And in case of delay exceeding 6 hours, the airline has to inform the passenger well in advance i.e 24 hours in advance of the original departure.
The charter also said that the airline must inform the flight cancellation at least two weeks before the scheduled time of departure and also arrange an alternative flight for the passenger or alternative refund. The charter that was released at the Aviation Conclave 2019 also says that moreover if the passenger misses a connecting flight on the same ticket then the passenger should be given compensation up to Rs 10,000 subject to the conditions.
The rule also says that if the flight has been delayed and the passenger arrives on the original time, the airline will give free meal and refreshment to the passenger during the wait time.
In case of overbooking, the airline will provide alternative flight scheduled to depart within one hour of the original flights depart time. Failing to do so, the airline is subject to pay compensation.
The rules also said that in case a passenger cancels a ticket, he has the right to receive a refund of statutory taxes, user development, and passenger services fees that are levied by an airline. However, for a foreign flight, the right to refund will be subject to the airline’s internal policy.
If a person gets injured or dies due to the fault of the airline, the airline is then liable to pay Rs 20 lakh.
