The Goa tourism department will start cracking a whip on the operators of beach shacks, including shacks erected on private lands, if the shacks are not removed when the season ends on May 31.

Tourism department will actually start dismantling shacks if not removed by the operators within a grace period of ten days. Operators will be given a grace period of ten days up to June 10.

Around 370 shacks were allowed in the private properties and 324 at beaches this season. The department kept an eye on the beach shacks, especially checking that shacks were not erected beyond earmarked area.

During the last few years, beach shack operators blatantly violated conditions laid down by the department while allotting beach shacks. Since this year the department went about breaking up deck beds with electronic saws, beaches remained clear of hindrances thus providing easy access to the public on the beach.

Posting of IRB tourist police also helped the department to keep away hawkers and vendors pestering tourists.
