The tourism department on Tuesday refloated a global tender for providing beach lifeguarding and safety services along 105km of Goa's coastline.
Though the tourism department had floated a tender in April this year inviting bids for beach lifeguarding, it had to curtail the tendering process after one of the bidders went to court alleging illegalities in the process.
The government had then told the high court of Bombay at Goa that it would withdraw the tendering process and refloat a fresh tender.
Drishti Special Response Services Pvt Ltd, the present service provider's five-year contract with the department ended in June. Since then it has been given extensions twice due to the delay in refloating the tender and selecting a new service provider.
Drishti's extended contract with the tourism department ends on October 31. It appears that the government will be compelled to extend Drishti's services further as it is unlikely to complete the tendering process by the end of next month. The last date for submitting bids as per the tender floated on Tuesday is October 28.
While earlier lifeguarding services were provided at beaches alone, this time two water bodies- Dudhsagar waterfalls and Mayem Lake - will also have lifeguards posted. Many drowning deaths have been reported at the two tourist spots.
