With charter arrivals crossing the 1,000 mark, the 2013-14 tourist season has beaten previous records with the highest number of charters landing in Goa in any tourist season.
Till Sunday, 1,082 charters had landed in the state, most of them from Russia and other commonwealth of independent states (CIS). Last season, Goa had received 996 charters. This season, Goa has already received 804 charters from Russia, and 31 from Kazakhstan, whereas just 150 charters came from UK, a number little less than last year.
The tourist season has never been this "good" for Goa, not even in the years between 2004 and 2007 when charter tourism picked up in a big way in the state as charter flights rose significantly from 300-400 charters a season to 600-700. Soon after, the economic crisis of 2008-2009 saw charter arrivals drop by almost 100 per season.
From 2008 onwards, the arrival of tourists from UK-considered to be a prominent charter market for Goa tourism until then-started fluctuating. As British tourists declined, the number of Russian tourists rose. The Russian market started flourishing in 2011, when the number of Russian tourists jumped from 57,623 to 1,33,780.
