Promising to bring about economic development in Goa that will realise the dreams of Goans, chief minister Manohar Parrikar during his Independence day speech in Panaji said his government is working towards earning a name for Goa as the cleanest tourist destination, which will help the state attract high spending tourists.
The government's thrust will be on four areas of employment, garbage management, tourism and development, he said.
"After drugs and prostitution, garbage has proved to be the third biggest hurdle that is keeping away high spending tourists from Goa. Work is on by the state government of collecting garbage lying in heaps and strewn around all over the coastal belt, highways, city and rural roads. It is my promise to you all that Goa will soon gain fame as the cleanest tourist destination," Parrikar said.
He said that the government has decided to set up state-of-the-art garbage treatment plants in three places in Goa. "The plants will be functional within a year and will resolve Goa's garbage problem entirely," Parrikar said.
The chief minister said that prostitution and drugs have become synonymous with Goa's tourism sector and that he wants to change this perception of the state as per a TOI report.
"Goa's economy and employment generation is largely dependent on the tourism sector. But some vested interests are trying to ruin the fame earned by Goa's tourism. Prostitution and drugs are ruining Goa's tourism sector, but my government is determined to rid Goa of these ills. We have recently decided to not allow dance bars in Goa at any cost," Parrikar said.
