The Goa tourism department along with Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC) has decided to put to use its properties spread across the state which otherwise remain open to encroachments.

The tourism department and GTDC have about 125 properties totaling about 15 lakh sq m of area at various locations in the state, including at some prominent spots in the coastal belts. The process for utilizing properties lying vacant in Anjuna, Vagator and Calangute has already begun, a tourism department official told TOI.

"Parking lots, changing rooms, and toilets are being built at some of the areas,"he added. Tourism projects are being planned on properties at Mayem lake, Tambdi Surla, Mangueshi-Mardol, Selaulim dam, Dona Paula as well Pernem that will be executed through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), which is GTDC.

The thrust is on having tourism projects with investment from private players. "We are for public/private joint ventures," he said, further adding that project consultants have been put on job to prepare feasibility reports and help in tendering processes. Many vacant plots belonging to the tourism department have been encroached upon during the last few years. In a couple of cases, matters have reached courts.
