The Goa tourism department has floated a tender inviting bids for comprehensive management and cleanliness of about 40 beaches along the 105 km coastline of the state.

The successful bidder will have to bear responsibility for segregation, composting organic waste and depositing non-biodegradable materialat a centralized place, in addition to collection of waste.

Mechanized beach cleaning will be part of this exercise but it will be taken up on a trial basis at two beaches - Colva and Calangute where waste generated is high due to high density of tourist inflow, the officer said.

Though beach cleaning is currently being done by the tourism department at nine beach stretches through various contractors, it has not been a very effective exercise. It spent about 1.5 crore annually on beach cleaning and yet beaches have remained littered with plastic and other waste.

It is also not known how contractors dispose garbage collected by them. The tourism official said all lacunae have been taken care off. The successful bidder will have to not just collect waste on the beaches, but will have to segregate and transport it and have composting pits for treating organic waste.

It will also be his responsibility to see that all kinds of non-biodegradable waste such as plastic, glass bottles and any other metal collected, will be deposited at a centralized place.

The tourism department officials will monitor beach cleaning carried out by the selected agency from time-to-time, he said.
