A light and sound show and photo exhibitions may soon be a regular feature at the Gateway of India, while solar lights are set to brighten up the Elephanta island, off the coast. These activities, aimed at encouraging tourism, have been planned as part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).
For the beautification project planned on the island, Rs 16 crore of the CSR budget have been earmarked by the JNPT. A wall and a pathway will be constructed on the west side of the island in the next three years. Union Minister of Shipping G K Vasan and Union Minister of State of Communications & IT and Shipping Milind Deora announced these plans at an event at Gateway Wednesday evening.
Photographers at Gateway will don uniform and will be trained in soft skills. The initiative also plans a boat cruise for senior citizens. The ferry will accommodate 70 people and will cruise around the harbour once every fortnight for the next six months. There will be a doctor and a lifeguard on board for the elderly. The maiden ferry was flagged off by Vasan n Wednesday.
