The World Heritage Committee has inscribed ' Fort Jesus ' into the World Heritage List. The Fort has formally received this recognition for its outstanding Universal Values from UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee sitting in its 35th Session in Paris , France .
This will be sixth Kenyan Heritage site to make into the UNESCO list. The others are the Mijikenda Sacred Kaya Forests , Lamu, Lake Turkana National Parks and Mt. Kenya National Park . The Lakes system of Kenya was inscribed earlier this week in this same session of the World Heritage Committee meeting.
The Kenyan delegation led by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of State for National Heritage and Culture Dr. Jacob ole Miaron put a spirited defense in favor of the inscription of the three Lakes. The listing Fort Jesus will bring into sharp focus both at the national and international levels, the conservation status of the Fort. Moreover, the delegation noted that this will greater visitation of the Fort thereby contributing to the Vision 2030 aspirations of diversifying Kenyan tourism products.
