After defaulting on salaries and payments to vendors, some of India’s domestic airlines haven’t made payments to their own lobbying group, widening a rift among them.
The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) lobby group is headed by former bureaucrat Anil Baijal and members include Air India Ltd, Jet Airways (India) Ltd, Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir. They are required to pay Rs. 10 lakh each as annual membership fee.
“Some airlines have defaulted,” said FIA secretary general Baijal, “There is a requirement of paying subscription fee. Some have old dues.”
Air India owes Rs. 1.15 crore to FIA and Kingfisher, Rs. 50 lakh. Low-fare carriers SpiceJet and GoAir hadn’t paid the annual subscription fee at the time of the FIA annual general meeting on 23 June as per a report in livemint.com.
That gave rise to some friction at the meeting, according to two officials familiar with the matter who declined to be named.
“They jolly well pay if they want to continue it or wind it up, it’s up to them. That decision is up to the members,” Baijal said, agreeing there were differences on some subjects.
