Island that houses the world heritage site Elephanta caves saw light after darkness with the he ceremonial inauguration of a pilot project that seeks to bring solar power to the three villages of Elephanta. Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) chief Ratnakar Gaikwad announced how Shetbunder, Morabunder and Rajbunder will now get power to run four bulbs in each house and charge mobile phones. 

However, the island's inhabitants were not enthused by a "mere experiment'' as the solar unit does not enable them to operate television sets, refrigerators or even ceiling fans.
