Surat’s most crowded beach, Dumas, is all set to undergo transformation, the work for which will be undertaken by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). The civic body wants to develop the beach as a tourist destination with requisite facilities and has earmarked Rs5 crore for the same in its 2012-13 budget.
With its easy accessibility, the long and safe seacoast of Dumas is flooded with tourists round the year. The beach developed on its own. Now, the SMC has taken an initiative to convert this beach into a tourist spot. The civic body has already initiated the process of surveying the beach and procuring land for it as per a report in DNS by Rishi Banerji.
“The beach is a popular spot not only among locals but all those who visit the diamond city. Till 2006, it was not under civic limits and so we could not plan any development project. We feel it is right time to develop Dumas as a tourist destination,” said Bhimji Patel, chairman of SMC standing committee.
