The six domestic airlines carried 50.77 lakh passengers in April this year, a marginal decline of 0.27 per cent from the 50.91 lakh passengers flown in the same period last year.
The latest data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation show that this is the fourth consecutive month this calendar year that the domestic airlines have flown fewer passengers compared to last year.
In April this year, IndiGo carried 15.11 lakh passengers compared with 12.12 lakh, while SpiceJet carried 9.94 lakh passengers against 8.99 lakh for the same period. Jet Airways and its low-cost arm, JetLite, together carried 11.47 lakh passengers against 14.38 lakh in the same month last year.
Budget carrier IndiGo seems to be the prime beneficiary of recovery in demand for air travel continuing in April through March, as it widened its share of the Indian market flying almost one third of total passengers. IndiGo's market share touched 29.8%, beating its own record of last few months at 27.4%.
