Creation of a Goa tourism development board, diversifying into hinterland, heritage, eco and other forms of tourism, stricter enforcement of rules to curb public littering and curbing overdevelopment and concretization are some of the measures suggested to safeguard and boost Goa's tourism.
The ideas came from various tourism experts and stakeholders at a conference on 'Riding the next wave of green practices' organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as per a TOI report.
Tourism director Nikhil Desai said that green practices will form the cornerstone of the Goa tourism master plan that the government is presently formulating. Though the government has a role at the macro-policy level, sustainable tourism is the responsibility of every stakeholder and not only of the government, he said.
Mathew Samuel, IAS officer who was earlier the tourism secretary in Goa, related his three-decade-long experience in tourism promotion in Pondicherry. He said Pondicherry used renewable energy, eco-friendly toilets, and electric vehicles for public transport. Not only did the Pondicherry government incentivize green practices, it ensured strict compliance with rules particularly the CRZ rules, which does not happen in Goa.
