As per a report in TOI, in a few days, flyers can expect to be compensated by airlines for flight delays and cancellations.Even those denied boarding can hope to take the erring airlines to task.
The DGCA had put up its draft proposal on passenger compensation on its website (www.dgca.gov.in) in June and had specified that it was open to suggestions and recommendations till July 20.The final picture will emerge soon.It should come into effect in a day or two as and when the Director General of Civil Aviation signs it, said a civil aviation ministry spokesperson.
Before it comes into effect,the DGCA will also be notifying the airlines about the new norms.So far,we have not received any notification from the DGCA on the issue of compensation, said an airline official on Thursday.The airlines are informed beforehand so that we can prepare for the changes before they are implemented, the official pointed out.
The draft proposal,which ran into seven pages chalked out the norms for facilities to be provided to passengers by airlines due to denied boarding,cancellation of flights and delays.For denied boarding or flight cancellation (only if the flyer is not informed in advance),the airline will pay the following compensation in addition to refund of ticket money Rs 2,000 or the value of ticket,whichever is less,for flights having a block time of up to and including an hour Rs 3,000 or the value of ticket,whichever is less,for flights having a block time of up to and including two hours Rs 4,000 or the value of ticket,whichever is less,for flights having a block time of more than two hours.
