China's online ticketing sites have stopped booking on flights going to Malaysia. This is the first major commercial backlash against Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur announced that there was no hope for passengers of the missing MH370 flight on March 24.
Online travel agencies eLong, LY.com, Qunar and Mango are among those who have imposed the ban. The move will mean cancellation of a large number of flights of Chinese and foreign airline companies because a major part of airline ticketing is done by online sites in the country with even agents using the service.
The portal said that it would pay the families of two missing passengers who had booked tickets in MH370 through it 100,000 yuan each "as a consolation".
LY.com voiced similar sentiment saying its ban will go on until Malaysian Airlines "sorts out the truth and offers a satisfactory explanation to all the victims and the Chinese people". It offered to compensate passengers who have booked trips to Malaysia earlier.
The move will severely hit China-Malaysia business relations in 2014 which is being celebrated as the year of friendship by the two countries.
