Chhattisgarh's annual cultural extravaganza-the national Sirpur dance and music festival-will get to a colourful start with ambassador of Republic of Korea Lee Joongyu, declaring the event open at the historic Buddhist site of Sirpur on January 4.

Being organized by the Chhattisgarh Tourism Board to promote Sirpur as a tourism destination, the ancient Buddhist site has already become part of a wider Buddhist circuit, as the region was an important centre for Buddhism during sixth and 10th century AD. The place was visited by famous Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang in 639AD, who had described the city in his accounts as a pillar of Buddhism in the central region of India.

State tourism board managing director Santosh K Mishra said for the first time they have published promotional literature in six languages- Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Sinhalese and Thai--to cater to larger number of tourists from these countries.

The inaugural day of Sirpur national dance & music festival will have an array of cultural performances from the regions of Chhattisgarh and the other states coupled with the classical dance performances choreographed by Santosh Nair, an exponent of Chhau and contemporary dancing.
