The Chhattisgarh Tourism Department is planning to illuminate Chitrakote Waterfalls with a light and sound show which is in the final stages of clearance. A detailed project report, prepared by India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), has been presented to the Ministry of Tourism (MoT). According to a report in Times of India, the plan includes walkways and viewing decks apart from installation of world class light and sound technology at Rs 17.50 crore. Subrat Sahoo, Tourism Secretary, Chhattisgarh said, “We've sanctioned the project in principle. Final checks are being made on the technology. We want to make Chitrakote Waterfalls the icon of the state.”
If cleared, the illumination project could bring funds and fame to India's largest waterfalls. About 95 feet deep and 650 feet wide, Chitrakote Waterfalls is often called India's Niagara Waterfalls. But while the Niagara waterfalls in North America attract eight million visitors every year - a large chunk of who are Indians – only few hundred visitors, mostly locals visit Chitrakote Waterfalls.
Last year, Chhattisgarh found itself at the bottom of tourist arrivals. Among 35 states and Union Territories, it ranked 26 for domestic tourists and 33 for foreign tourists. Only 1,415 foreign travellers visited the state. In contrast, Chandigarh alone got more than 37,000 foreign visitors.
