The Charminar may be the most visited place in the city but visitors to the 400-year-old monument cannot get a glass of water there. Drinking water arrangement at the monument has never been a matter of importance for authorities, locals and visitors at the site said.
Charminar witnesses an average tourist footfall of 4000 every day. Given the numbers, one would expect basic facilities like drinking water to be in place. But the long queues of visitors have no choice but to purchase packaged water from shops nearby as per a TOI report.
"We have one connection and one tap on the premises. The water supply is for an hour every alternate day. This is inadequate even for the staff, so how can we serve visitors?" an employee posted at the structure on a hot Monday afternoon asked.
Kuntal Mukherjee, a visitor from Kolkata, remarked that most tourists have hectic schedules and availability of potable water would be of immense relief for them. "At all the important places that we visited like Salar Jung Museum, drinking water was not a problem. Particularly during summer, it can be very hard on tourists who have an exhaustive schedule lined up for the day," he said.
