The state is striving hard to give impetus to tourism but it is the Union government which has a lead role to play, said Chhagan Bhujbal, minister of state for tourism on Friday. The crucial permissions come from the Union government for development in the tourism sector, he added.
Bhujbal said other than the ministry of tourism, the other major ministries should support India's role in global tourism. "Particularly, the attitude of the ministries such as forests, environment, highways or archaeology is relevant in this regard," he said.
He said the state has been striving to accommodate the demands of the tourism industry within its operational aspects but more fundamental push should come from the Centre.
The country has a 7000km long coastline but its is extremely difficult to plan tourism projects along the coast as the clearances under coastal regulation zone norms are nearly impossible to come by, said Bhujbal. The rules on the distance within which hotels cannot come up are not based on scientific studies, he added.
"Many Indian ministers and bureaucrats visit overseas and are familiar with tourist resorts almost touching the waves. However, they don't consider it appropriate to allow such hotels," he said as per a TOI report.
