Indian Govt. remains opposed to the European Union’s emission norms for airlines even as European Commission said it may fine Air India and Jet Airways for not sharing emission data. A senior aviation ministry official said that the matter will be taken-up with the commission. Air India and Jet Airways are the two airlines that fly to Europe.
As per news reports, European Commission has said that it could fine Indian and Chinese airlines for not sharing emission data. Indian carriers could be fined as much as €30,000.
“We have read reports but we will wait for an official communication. We had opposed the European Union’s emission trading scheme (ETS), which we considered a unilateral move. We had directed our airlines not to share any data with the EU,” a senior aviation ministry official said. “We had suggested that the International Civil Aviation Organisation take a decision on the issue but if they take unilateral decision, we will protect our carriers and take retaliatory action.”
AI and Jet said they will act as per the aviation ministry’s advice as per a HT report.
