Assam Tourism department have indicated that it was exploring possibilities of setting up a unit of the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in Guwahati as per a report in The Telegraph.

“We wrote to the California-based company on Monday seeking information about the modalities of setting up a unit here. It has acknowledged receiving our request and sent us a list of its units across the world, including three in Asia. Once we get its reply, we will work out the modalities. Within a month we will be able to say where we stand,” one of sources said.

The New tourism minister, Chandan Brahma talked about Disneyland in passing while dwelling on the need to develop entertainment-based tourism in and around Guwahati as it has the population and the infrastructure. “We have Accoland in Guwahati and we need more such parks in other places. We need to also think about something like Disneyland. We need to tap the tourism potential of our state as it can create both employment and generate revenue, ” the minister said.

Brahma was also for taking wildlife tourism beyond Kaziranga and Manas by coming up with circuit of major reserve and sanctuaries and promoting eco-tourism, religious tourism and tea tourism by creating the necessary infrastructure either through state funding or the public-private partnership mode.

Those in the know rue the fact that tourism in Assam was still largely Kaziranga and Kamakhya-driven despite its immense potential and government’s apparent intent to exploit the sector.
