Air India is planning to tap business travellers by introducing 40-seater planes on routes within non-metro cities in India. For the same, the airline has reached out to business chambers in non-metros with proposals to start intra-state services. The airline could also rope in state governments as equity partners for regional services.
“The airline is keen to inter-connect Ahmedabad, Surat, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Surat, Bhuj and Kandla. Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh have approached us for intra-state connectivity. It is time to create hubs in India for airlines the way Dubai has done,” said Arvind Jadhav, CMD, Air India, while addressing members of the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry members yesterday.
He added that Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Punjab look promising to start air services. Business and tourism activities are rising in these states, according to travel industry executives. “Business activities are rising in Gujarat and tourist destinations (like Rann of Kutch and Gir forests) too are getting popular. It is viable to start intra-state air service in cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Kandla, Bhuj and Porbandar,” said a travel agent
