National carrier Air India Friday said it will lower free baggage allowance (FBA) by five kg on economy class of all its domestic flights from May 13 and will impose a flat rate of Rs 250 per kg for luggage over the FBA.

Free baggage allowance for passengers travelling in AI's top four fare levels of economy class on domestic sector would be 20 kg and for all other fare levels it will be 15 kg, a statement from the airline said.

However, FBA for business class passengers remain unchanged at 35 kgs.

"Air India has revised passengers free baggage allowance for travel on domestic sectors with effect from May 13. The revised baggage allowance would be applicable on tickets issued on or after May 13. Tickets issued prior to this date would be honoured as per the earlier baggage allowance applicable," an airline spokesperson said.

The national carrier has also decided to levy a flat rate of Rs 250 per kg of excess baggage.

Meanwhile Jet Airways and JetKonnect have revised the free baggage allowance ( FBA) to 15 kilos in Economy class on all domestic travel within India, effective May 15, 2013. Cabin baggage will be restricted to seven kilos, as before.
