The Malnad eco-centre known as the Cherrapunjee of Karnataka perched at a height of 2,800 feet above sea level is now facing the threat of vandalism and mindless tourist pollution which has irked local communities and environmentalists.
The Agumbe and Kundadri hills are separated by 20 km of hills, evergreen forests and eco-sensitive hotspots which are dotted with homestays. But in recent times, these two places have been getting a copious inflow of tourists who have shown the least regard for nature and have littered the place with trash.
The pristine grasslands and shola forests are now littered with pet bottles, splinters of beer and liquor bottles, condoms, paper plates and all sorts of package food packets. Quite often, this trash is generated when students and IT professionals from Bangalore, Mangalore and Mysore visit these places for fun and frolic, according to a forest guard.
The sunset points at Agumbe and Kundadri are witness to this ravage. “We have appealed to tourists through signboards not to litter and desecrate the beauty of these spots. But no one pays any heed. We have also posted a sentry at a sunset point in addition to forest gate officials. They warn litterbug tourists. We are planning to post more men there during the coming tourist season” jurisdictional assistant superintendent of police Sharanappa said.
