Air India was not operating the direct flight since last 1 Nov due to Air India management decision and also due to shifting of the hub to New Delhi's Terminal T3. This had led to a lot of discomfort for the travelers from Gujarat who have to change aircrafts at Mumbai / Delhi.
According to Mr. Bhavin Shah, Chairman Gujarat Chapter, TAFI, "There have been constant and pioneering efforts of TAFI Gujarat, with the support of members and senior trade persons, which has even pushed others to join the cause of restarting the ex-Ahmedabad flights. Other bodies having the same interest in restarting of the flights are Air India Gujarat office, Gujarat tourism, media, GCCI, FICCI, Vishva Gujarati Samaj and other relevant bodies. Each have made their own individual efforts. We all have been successful in convincing the CMD of Air India, Mr. Arvind Jadhav who has taken the first positive step to re-start the direct flight to Newark via Mumbai without a change of aircraft at Mumbai from 10th January 2011. Such a direct flight is essential and is very much welcomed by one and all because of the comfort of not having to change aircrafts, no baggage hassles, no missed connections."
Previously there were cancellations due to fog which stranded the passengers in Delhi and let to hardships. Such flights are also very convenient for senior citizens, families with children. TAFI Gujarat is now demanding to Mr. Jadhav to further increase more direct flights out of Ahmedabad to London, Frankfurt, New York-JFK,Los Angeles ,Chicago, Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, etc.
