To improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon footprint, Airports Authority of India (AAI) will open a direct route between Mumbai and Delhi since July 26.The current route is a round-about through Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Udaipur, a flight from Mumbai to Delhi will now take a straight path, which will save them some time and burn less fuel.
Every flight is likely to save 1,000 kg (1 tonne) of carbon emissions. Ahmedabad-Delhi, Baroda-Delhi, Udaipur-Delhi are some other sectors which will have a straight route.
Mumbai airport officials said flights operate on a ground-based navigation system which does not allow them to follow a direct path and instead take a route via other cities. But now a satellite-based navigation system, RNAV5, will be used to allow a straight path to certain flights. "Most aircraft are already fitted with RNAV5 now. This means they can independently maintain their routes without the help of ground support and take a straight path to the destination," an airport official said.
To improve efficiency, the aircraft will also be allowed to fly at the optimum altitude. To achieve a higher altitude, the lateral and longitudinal separation between aircraft on these routes will be reduced as per a report in ET.
