The Indian Merchants’ Chambers in association with VFS Global Services Private Limited has taken the initiative to place Mumbai on the tourism map of the country by organizing the “Mumbai Heritage Walk” for the last 2 years. This year the Heritage Walk seen expatriates from 22 countries participating in the event. The route commenced from the colonial symbol Gateway of India and ended at the 104 year old Indian Merchants’ Chamber, established in the wake of the ‘Swadeshi Movement’. The primary objective of this Heritage Walk was to build awareness amongst Mumbaikars and foreign tourists about the city’s architectural brilliance with a visit to these historical monuments.
Among the countries represented by their nationals and diplomats in the heritage walk were Belgium, Canada, Argentina, Switzerland, Italy, USA, Australia, Oman, Netherlands, Turkey, Brazil, Malta, Poland, Malaysia, Britain, China, Ethiopia and Singapore.
Mr. Dilip Dandekar, President, Indian Merchants’ Chamber, has called upon foreign tourists arriving on brief business visits and passing through Mumbai on way to other destinations in India to extend their stay at least by a night to discover this 'enchanting city,’
Mr. Dandekar was addressing a meeting of foreign tourists and Mumbai-based consular corps after an exhilarating Heritage Walk through historic sites, replete with the memory of Colonial British Empire, between Gateway of India and Churchgate in the Fort city of Mumbai on February 5.
Addressing the colourful gathering of different ethnic groups and nationalities at the commencement of the Walk in front of Gateway of India, Mr. Pradip Madhvji, Chairman, IMC’s Travel and Tourism Committee, said, "Most people including Mumbaikars haven’t walked through the heritage precincts in Fort Mumbai, because they usually scurried along the city’s roads in the cozy comfort of their vehicles.
