Over the last few weeks, the Central Vigilance Commission has approved serious action, including possible dismissal from government, against eight senior officials of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, for illegal activities such as getting their children or spouses appointed in private airlines without clearance and using their position to unduly influence these airlines.
The sorry state of affairs at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) was apparent much before inquiries by the Central Vigilance Commission in the past few weeks. Shocking revelations of officials cosying up to the very entities they are supposed to monitor have emerged within days of the exit of Bharat Bhushan as DGCA chief after he cracked down on a series of illegal activities by airlines and non-scheduled operators, and wrote out a warning notice to Kingfisher threatening to shut it down.
