In 2014 there are 17 occasions when one can prolong the weekend to four or even five days by taking just one day off from work and combining it with holidays. The total is seven occasions more than last year and travel agents say they are already flooded with calls for holiday bookings. Also, like in most years, there will be nine dry days, with two each falling in January and October.

People who work five-day weeks will get 126 holidays (including Saturday and Sunday), up from 121 last year and 124 in 2012. Those who get the second and fourth Saturdays off will have 102 holidays, up from 94 last year.

Of the 17 long weekends, two are five-day long and the remaining four-day long, both categories including a day's leave from work. The first of the five-day weekends is October 1-5 and the second October 22-26. Three four-day weekends are in April and two each in March, August and November. The first four-day weekend was January 11-14 and the last will be December 25-28.
